Livestock and Poverty Reduction
Traditionally Scanagri has been a well-reputed livestock consulting company par excellence and which began back in the 1970s with support in livestock development to oil producing countries that wanted to convert oil revenue into self-sufficiency in food production. From this start in mainly the private sector Scanagri later branched off to also covering the donor market and a substantial number of technical assistance projects to improve livestock production were implemented by Scanagri companies, mainly in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
After some years where livestock projects per se have not been very visible in the donor portfolios of development projects, a new trend is on the way and Scanagri has taken due notice of this and strengthened its in-house expertise as well as consolidated old relations and established new support networks to provide competent technical advice in the livestock sector with emphasis on
- Policy formulation and institutional development
- Human resources development for specific target stakeholders in the sector, including grass-root organisations, producer groups, and others
- Animal health and veterinary services
- Extension services to improve production and income
- Organisation of inputs supply and marketing
- Surveillance and monitoring of market developments
For the smallholder livestock families the expected results of such specific interventions in the livestock sector would include increased household incomes because of increases in livestock products, quantitatively as well qualitatively, elimination of food insecurity in rural areas through improved animal health, better feeding of animals, efficiently working market outlets and more capable and better trained providers of services and management among the various stakeholders in the sector.
