Scanagri is working within food, agriculture, rural development, environment and natural resource management. In order to implement programs and projects within here it is nessesary to have a multi-targeted approach encompassing different disciplines, including not only agronomic, but also economic, social and political instruments and approaches.

Acknowledging this diversity, Scanagri, in line with new approaches to rural development, works at three levels in order to be able to cope with the challenges facing rural poverty reduction, sustainable natural resource management and agricultural development in  future. The levels are:

Building the bridge
Working at all three levels gives Scanagri a unique understanding of the links between them. Scanagri sees both the negative implications for rural people and farmers caused by un-sound macro agricultural policies and the benefits that rural people and farmers can derive from having been given the right incentives.

Comprehending the livelihood situation of the poorest, provides Scanagri with insight and sensitivity when working at national level enhancing economic growth and ensuring environmentally sustained development. In return, the experience of having designed overall programmes adds value when interacting directly with the farmers, as constraints are thus more easily identified and advice can be extended on opportunities and ways forward.

The goal most often is to modernise agriculture and natural resources management, and to establish solid social and economic development in rural areas, but in order to do so, one must have a profound understanding of the underlying causes of why development efforts are not always straightforward.
